The mission of Macquarie University Rowing is to support and
develop its members to reach their sporting goals in a fun and
spirited environment. Over the last three years the Macquarie
University rowing program has finished in the top four at the
Australian University Championships.
To date, the program has built a strong and team and are looking
forward to future success. 2007 highlights included our men's pair
of Richard and Ian Allsop defending their 2006 championship
title.
Rob Richards, Head Rowing Coach
Now entering his fifth year as the Head Coach of the Macquarie
University Rowing Program, Rob Richards has established Macquarie
University Rowing as among one of the country's leading university
programs.
Rob's exceptional career as an athlete provides him with an
outstanding skill set to enable maximal performance from his
athletes. Rob has earned five state and seven national titles in
conjunction with six World Cup medals and three World Championship
medals. His most prestigious wins consist of a gold medal at the
1997 World Championships in France and a silver medal at the Sydney
2000 Olympics.
Rob's coaching history began as Regional Development Coach in
Ballarat Victoria. He then travelled to Toronto, Canada in 2002 to
coach at Argonaut Rowing Club where his Open Women's coxed eight
captured third at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. That same
year, he was selected as a coach for the Canada Cup team after his
women's coxless four captured gold at the Ontario Provincial
Championships. His women's eight went on to win gold at Canada Cup
in 2002.
Rob returned to Canada in 2004 to coach at Hanlan Boat Club in
Toronto. That year his women's open double scull and coxed eight
won gold at the Ontario Provincial Championships. At the Royal
Canadian Henley Regatta, his women's double captured second while
his under 23 women's pair placed third. All of Rob's remaining
crews progressed to the final at Henley in 2004.
Rob's time coaching in Australia has demonstrated some
impressive finishes with St. Patrick's College winning Head of the
Lake in 2003. Rob's work as Assistant Coach at Sydney Rowing Club
provided him the opportunity to guide his junior men's quad into
the 2006 final at Henley Royal Regatta in England.
